Panhandle
Bass Club fished Millers Ferry out of Ellis Landing for our May
tournament with 21 members
and 5 guests. We found
the water high and muddy with a lot of debris floating down the
river. It kept us on our toes, especially early with
low light. Reports
from those who fished Friday were varied, but the general comments
were not very encouraging. Some
fish were caught on plastics, frogs and spinner baits.
Steve M had a good catch on Friday. As is usually
the case there were several tournaments out of Ellis Saturday
morning. Lee and I came
up Saturday morning and found a long line of boaters waiting to
launch. Of course we saw way too many of them launching
solo with no help, leaving the trucks on the ramp while they parked
the boat etc. I am sure
they appreciate the fact that we do it right helping each other
and clearing the ramp. I had reports
from north and south of the landing and did not know where we
wanted to start. At the
last minute I ran north to fish we found in the FOM tournament
last week, a good move. We found shad running up on the bank to get
away from the hungry bass and boated some quality fish on frogs
early. I had a limit at 7:30. We continued catching fish until about 10:00
when the wind picked up and muddied the bank (even more), and
6 more boats moved in on us. I
heard from John B, he had 1 and Mack had 2. We moved
back to another spot and Artie boated number 4 and 5. His fifth fish hit a lizard and it was a good
one (lunker hopes moved into his mind). No other reports and we had not seen another
club boat except Andy early fishing across the lake from us. Back at
Ellis, we saw John S release 2 small fish and leave early with
a bad back. As the boats came in it seemed like a lot of
fish had been caught. There
were two parking lot casualties.
Wayne found someone had clipped the back of his trailer
and left without saying a word, and I had a cool hub come off. Thanks to Walter, Artie and a good cheering
section we repaired the wheel quickly.
Too bad about Wayne’s trailer. Doesn’t that burn you up when someone leaves
the scene? Artie weighted
his fish first 4.46lbs, then waited with
anticipation as the remaining 25 bags came in.
Rich H had a great bag with 7 fish 15.07 lbs. and took
3rd place, Richie also had a limit for 16.57 lbs and
second place, and Tony B took top honors with 16.79.
Most fish caught on frogs, some on spinner baits and some
on lizards. Arties big fish held for his first cash and
his personal best, congratulations to all the winners. I understand
there was a quail feast in Euriah for about 20 of the members
following the tournament,
Lee and I slept all the way home. Next month
we go to Alabama River at Cooters Pond. Keep your
line wet!
