Reminded membership (4x) that we
have a 2 PM weigh in Saturday at Cooters Pond! Meeting Adjourned at 7:04 pm Sincerely, Ron Fairbanks (Secretary) Cooters Pond Tournament Summary 20 members and 3 guests
made the mid summer assault on the Alabama River at Cooters
Pond. Several members pre-fished Friday and it was
a mixed review, some hammered them and others had a light
day with many small fish.
Tony and I launched at Swift
Creek and the strategy was to fish north between Swift and
Cooters as prep for the Fishers of
Men event in 3 weeks.
Unfortunately I thought Tony was directing me to the
right up the river so I headed that direction for 15 or so
miles and was going to fish my way back.
I wondered why the Red buoys were on my left side and
5 hours later, I got a call from Tony who said, “you went south?” I basically
wasted 5 hours of practice as I did find some decent spots
and didn’t want to run 35 miles to get to them Saturday expecting
a tournament or two out of Swift to beat us there. I headed back and ran around
5-10 miles north of
Swift creek and had just enough time to find
a nice back lake that had a good amount of water hyacinth
in it to flip. I have become almost addicted to flipping these
heavy mats but finding any thick enough or in deep enough
water was a real challenge.
I did flip a few in the boat on Friday and one of fish
moved the entire weed bed when he turned on it. “I found my
starting spot”, I said after not sticking him.) Saturday I fished the spot with everything I
had and only manages 2 small fish.
I ran towards Cooters ramp and on the way stopped at
any flipping mats that looked promising.
I was able to catch 6 fish but no good ones!
I left around 1 hour to fish wood on the main river
with no success other than a few rats. Tony stayed on his secret “Hot Spot” again and
ended up with a few kickers including a 4 lb 7 oz lunker that
went a long way towards another impressive finish!
The worm bite was the ticket this weekend with at least
3 of the top 4 spots using Texas and Shakee rigged worms.
Bobby’s mystery bait (spinner bait) also did well. At weigh in, the rain came
down briefly and the humidity was like a sauna! The Air conditioned seats felt oh so special
on the way home! Those
opposed to a 2pm summer weigh in didn’t complain at this event!!!
Any questions should be addressed
to Sincerely, Ron Fairbanks Club Secretary
