We fished Alabama River at Cooters Pond for our June tournament.  Rumors were that Richie took Andy up for a couple of days last week to show him how to do it!

Almost everyone went up on Friday to pre-fish and most caught fish although there were many short fish.  Artie and I found some quality fish both on the river and in the pockets and on a variety of baits.  John B and Mack both said they caught fish on spinner baits Friday.  Richie said he was on ‘em.

Now we should address some hammer nominees…Charles got a late start, and an even later finish.  It seems he was loading his boat when the phone rang, Jim Bell had run down river to Swift Creek (about 20miles).  His boat would not start, so Charles was asked to help him, as he did.  Charles ran down and towed Jim back, almost a 4 hour trip.   Cliffie had been locked out of his room, as Charles had the key, so he paced the parking lot all that time.  While we all waited for Charles and Jim, Steve Meadows broke his locker key off in the lock with his rod luckier locked and he was in a panic to have rods to fish with.  Charles and Jim finally showed up, Mack pulled Jim’s cowling broke the bendix loose and fired up Jims motor with no problem.  Steve came to me looking for JB weld to put his key back together and as luck would have it, I had a spare key to Steve’s boat and it worked.  Artie went to help him, but he had broken the lock when he unlocked it so they spent the next hour removing the lock from his access panel to put it in the rod locker…of course they put it in backwards the first time, but finally turned it around and completed the job.  Saturday morning Cliffee parked on the ramp to get his boat ready for the tournament, he said his bulb would not pump up.  Richie proved that Walter’s boat will throw a 20 foot rooster tail, as he showered all the boats he passed going down the river.

Ok, now to fishing.  Artie and I went to our first spot and had 6 fish in the boat by 5:30 a. m. then it stopped.  John B said he had 2 quick, Mack had a limit early.  Jim B fished one grass line all day and had 4 on worms.  Richie had a limit at 10:00 a. m., so he said.  At the weigh in there were several good bags of fish.  I had six including a 4.01 lb. largemouth, most on frogs in the grass.  Artie kicked my butt catching 14 bass and bringing a 7 fish limit in.  Andy fished Richie’s spot and had 2.  Richie lost some of his (they escaped through the fill line in the live well) and only had 5.  Mr. Pres did his job and had a limit taking 4th place with 7 weighing 11.82 after trying to knock Dora out with a shakey head.  Mr. River Specialist Bobby jumped into 3rd with 6 weighing 11.95, Tony took 2nd with 7 weighing 13.13, and Big Rich walked away with first with 7 weighing 14.20.  Fish were caught on everything, Tony fished worms, Rich fished shakey heads, and Bobby had secret bait.

We almost missed the rain Saturday, but it drenched us as we loaded the boats, all in all a good tournament and always great to be on the water.

Next month we go to Ala river at Holly creek.  Until then, keep your line wet.
