Lake Wheeler

Located in Athens Alabama, Wheeler is below Lake Wilson and Pick Wick. Wheeler sits between 2 damns and is fed by the Tennessee River. Wheeler feeds into Lake Guntersville. Spots, smallmouth, and large mouths are available. The system has not been affected by the lack of rain. In Oct it will be at summer pool level. It is 60 miles between the 2 dams. There is no size limits on any of the 3 species.

Joe Wheeler State Park is located approximately 8 miles from Athens, Alabama.

The cabin check in also has a store for ice and snacks however it closes at 5:00 PM so any ice needed should be purchased the evening prior to each fishing day. When you need towels, wash cloths, etc, you need to take the dirty ones to the check in point to change them out. Always make note of closing time each day since they are subject to be different each day for the weekends.

Te cabins have televisions, air conditioning and micro waves. There are grills set up outside each cabin for cooking out should you decide to do that or more nights. There are various restaurants in close driving vicinity of the state park. There is at least one bait and tackle store in that same driving range.

In addition you have Bay Hill Marina with the following available:

1. Restaurant serving Breakfast/Lunch/ and Supper. However breakfast opens at 8 am. The restaurant closes at 9pm.

2. Store: offers drinks ice and snacks. However opens at 7 am.

To Joe Wheeler State Park it is approximately 360 miles/ counting fuel stops and one stop for meal it is approximately 7 hour drive

Tentative Cost:

Fuel for vehicle based on 15 MPG round trip plus 60 miles for out and about 780 miles=52 gallons fuel at 3.00 = 156.00

9 gas price figured at higher rate not knowing if gas will remain at the present prices or creep back up

Cabins 31 and 32 are 324.00 for 4 nights divided by 4 = 81.00 each

Cabins 26, 28 & 30 are 280.80 for 4 nights divided by 4 = 70.20 each

Cabin 25 is 210.60 for 3 nights divided by 2 = 105.30 each
