February

February 9, 2008

Panhandle Bass Club fished Tensaw River out of Cliff’s for our February tournament.  We had 21 of our 22 active members present.  Cliffs, as usual, was pretty crowded with at least 2 other tournaments and the regular locals launching.

Blast off was somewhat confusing with so many boats and it was very hard to hear, but we all made it without incident.  Most went south.  Reports were that most fish activity was in the grass.  One Mile, Three Mile, Chuckafee, Mud Hole, McVay and others were all mentioned as target areas to fish.

Artie and I started about mid way hoping to locate the fish I found last week, but to no avail so we headed south with the rest.  I found a couple pretty quick on a worm, then saw Billy who had three on a crank.  We moved back further in the creek and picked up a couple more, Billy moved back and said he had a limit.  Reports from others were pretty slim.  I thought the bite would change after the tide change around 10:00 a m and it did.  The water was warming, but the water was getting more stained.  That did not bother the fish.  Artie and I kept each other busy with the net and probably boated 30 fish for the day.  My guess was that it turned on for everyone.

Back at the weigh in we found some long faces.  Frank had motor problems and struggled along with Ron, Ken and,  John S. John (Mr. Sandman) Stafford found a nice beach to spend the day on and did not make it back for the weigh in (how were the bikinis, John?).  There were three seven fish limits.  Tony, Rich and myself, but a limit did not get you an automatic slot ‘in the money’.  John B was third with 6 fish weighing 8.30 lbs., I took second with 7 fish weighing 8.45 lbs., and Richie won with 7 fish weighing 10.06 lbs., and a lunker of 3.06 lbs. caught by Steve Graham.   There were several good stringers and it was an absolutely beautiful day, even if most of us missed the beach.

Keep your line wet!
