Panhandle Bass club spent our tournament on Lay Lake at Clanton, Alabama.  We have had some great tournaments on Lay in the past and everyone was looking forward to getting back on productive waters.  Several members went up Thursday to explore ‘new water’; most others came up on Friday morning to get a little pre-fishing in along with some socializing.

The Friday reports were mixed with most everyone catching some pretty good fish.  We were greeted Saturday morning with 3 other clubs and a local open tournament series all out of the State Ramp.  There were also reports of several other tournaments including a BASS weekend series up the lake.

Artie and I started a grass line on the lower end and he had 2 in the boat before I could get my first cast in.  Then we had an aerator pump burn out, and short out the aerator system on my boat, we went into repair mode and after too much time spent on repairs had a working system.  Unfortunately his fish did not make it.  We moved around the lower end and managed a couple more keepers but it was tough.  We saw Sarge, John K, Tony, and Steve M and they all said the same thing…tough.

At the weigh in there were far too many long faces and low numbers of fish.  Mack had a good stringer 6 fish 9.25 lbs for 3rd place, Rich R had 2nd with 7 fish 11.79lbs, Mr. Skunk himself led the pack with 7 weighing 13.63 lbs.

Sunday met us with only 1 other club at the State Ramp so our hopes were high.  We went to my favorite hole and put 2 in the boat on a frog right off the bat…take that Artie!  We started in Paint Creek with a large number of boats following us in.  We saw Steve M, he had 1 early on spinner bait, then we saw John K on his way home. It did not look like the bite was much better Sunday than Saturday as we got back for the 1:00 weigh in.  Some changes in the leader board with Mack dropping to 4th place, Rich R finished 3rd with a total weight of 14.98, Wayne moved up to 2nd with 15.78 and Mr. Billy stayed on top with 27.92.  Great finish Billy!  It’s been a long time.  Crankbaits were reported to be successful along with plastic craws for the leaders.

A good time was had by all, with a few unfortunate incidents for Cliffie, Mitch, and Ken but nothing major.  I know we all are looking forward to Guntersville next month.  In the mean time…

Keep your line wet!
