Challenging
is not the word for the Escambia River
for our July Tournament. Conditions
were almost perfect, water level good, color good, falling tide all day, cloud
cover predicted…fish unpredictable! With
23 members scheduled to fish, we all expected a good day; however it was not
to be. We only filled 10 places
and no limits.
Blast off at daylight saw all possible directions, some to Blackwater and Yellow, some to East river, some up some down. I saw John B after about 1 ½ hours, he caught 5 shorts, I had not had a bite, a little while later I talked to Walter he was ‘bonafied’! Artie and I started on the main river, and then moved to the creek mouths, I finally boated a keeper after he missed one on a worm. Working my way up the river I saw ‘skunk man’, no fish, nothing to blame it on! Wayne and Dora were fishing the main river, only shorts. Frank ran up and down until he ran out of gas and went home. I heard Richie had fished all of his holes, Danny’s holes, Walter’s holes and my holes and was in fear of receiving the skunk.
Weigh
in found a lot of long faces. Wayne
Thomley fell from his first place run and finished 3rd with 3.55
lbs. on a worm on the main river. Yours
truly managed 4 fish for 2nd place 5.95 lbs., I worked worms, buzz
baits, and pink ding-a-lings up and down the river and creek mouths, and our
illustrious Tournament Director took home the cabbage with big fish and 1st
place 3 fish 6.28 lbs.. He said
he used frogs, buzz baits, worms and dink rigs…funny how he used 4 baits for
3 fish?! Congratulations Walter!
Keep your line wet!
