August 2007 Panhandle Bass Club fished Alabama River at Holly Creek landing.  The morning started out hot and muggy even before daylight.  Blast off had members going all directions, some up Wolf Gut, some up the Alabama, and some south.  The water was a little low, but about what we expect for August.  Water color was better the further south you went, but water temps were 85+.

Fishing was tough as expected.  I headed south along with several others, after a couple of hours and no hits I saw John B he had one short, Big Rich was just south of John and no fish, Sarge came by no fish then Artie boated a keeper! (after I told him to use a black grape worm).  We saw Donnie; he had 1, talked to Walter no fish so we headed back up the river.  First stop, Artie put #2 in the boat but that was not the sign of change.  We worked on up working as many spots as possible when we saw a boat race, of sorts.  Wayne was well out in front of Richie, but I guess you can call it a race.

Back at the weigh in twelve people had a fish; most on worms a few on cranks or spinner baits.  Rich Hardy smoked the lunker at 3.41 and took 3rd place 2 fish 4.71 pounds, Richie brought in 5 for 5.62 pounds and second place on cranks, and back in #1 spot was Wayne Thomley with 3 fish weighing in at 6.71.  I understand he may be handicapped if he doesn’t start letting Dora catch fish too though.

I t was a tough tournament, we will all be glad to see some cooler temps and a more active bite.  Several members left early with no fish, fortunately there were no reports of any mishaps, although I did loose a wheel cover on the way home.

Keep your line wet!
